Ok I have Telstra broadband and have pinged my connection to both Google au and telstra etc.. I average with a 254ms ping. I try to enter MP games and anything with a ping greater than 200 and it won't let me in. Unfortunately there are not too many servers out there with a ping lower than 200 that I can access. Any help on this matter would be helpful.

Cheers

Where are you located? If it's metro Australia then the worst you should expect is 150 on a bad day.

Have you got any wierd settings in your router/firewalls etc.. or are they all factory default?

Life is too short

I wouldn't worry about your ping to google too much I ping google at 245... but get around 17-30 in gaming SA and Internode servers and under 100 generally anywhere in Aus.

Go to this link - LINK - Click Here and select internode's 3 meg test and post your results here.
It should look something like this:
"
Test run on 17/02/2009 @ 11:35 PM

Mirror: Internode
Data: 3 MB
Test Time: 2.81 secs

Your line speed is 8.73 Mbps (8727 kbps).
Your download speed is 1.07 MB/s (1091 KB/s).
"
We can go from there, also drop into TS and can help you out easier while talking.
But yeah, whats your location? what exchange are you on? what is your Broadband plan speed? eg: 256Kbps, 512Kbps, - up to 24Mbit and who is your ISP?
It could be things running on your PC, it could be that you are using a wireless connection, it could be many things.
As much info as possible helps a lot to find the source of the actual problem.

**EDIT*** I see Telstra's your provider....... mmm ok find your line speed etc, Telstra are renound for not providing a fast connection but usually ok pings...

The two worst places you could do a ping test.
1.Never ping Google...
2Never ping your ISP as you will not get an accurate response time..
Try pinging know game severs IP address look for how many HOPS it makes and what the ping time is at different HOPS to other exchanges.

easy way is using the tracert command instead of ping:
try:
tracert 118.127.10.120

to ping our game server

Actually I think you've been shaped. Compare my dowload speeds to yours on the same test. Have you paid your bill or exceeded your plan limit?

You should copy those results and email them off to your ISP.

I pinged back to as close to u as I can.

Ok. Thanks for the results there Medic.

I am a bit concerned at the ~2600 ping in the first couple of stages of your tracert.... Have you checked all the lines at home? Make sure you have the shortest possible lead from the outlet socket to your modem. How old is the wiring in your place? Do you have a central splitter? (these are around $35-$45 from Dick Smith, Tandy etc and can be installed easily by yourself, if you're ok with wires etc... no need for line filters then) Lan cables are not too long and in good condition with no kinks/coils in them? How far from the exchange are you located? Are the line filters installed correctly?

It looks like you are on 256kbps Broadband. This is the slowest BB and is not a lot better than dial-up. Find out for sure by calling your ISP and asking what is the speed of your connection. They range from 256k, 512, 1.5Mbit for standard Broadband.

If you are told that you are on a faster connection than 256, then we will have to find out why you are getting such slow speeds.
While you are on the phone to the ISP I would be asking if an upgrade would be possible on the connection to at least 512, preferably 1.5Mbit. If you are locked into a contract with that supplier then you might have to be persuasive in getting them to change you to a better plan for no extra fees..... Have you been with them for long? That usually helps in the pursuading!!!

Personally I think Telstra is shit as an ISP and are only worth looking at for wireless BB....

I'd recommend going to Broadband choice LINK - Click Here and using the phone number box in the top, input your land line number and see what ISP's have plans for that exchange.
Good ISP's are, iinet, internode, TPG, adam, basically just about anything other than telstra/optus!!!

I recommend if 24Mbit is available, iinet have some excellent plans at good prices if you bundle the home phone with them.
I hope there's something helpful in all that, Medic!! Dont hesitate to ask more questions and am always able to talk tech on ts with you if needed...
